What is explosion protection (Ex protection)?

Explosion Protection – Principles and Significance

Explosion protection (Ex protection) encompasses all technical and organisational measures designed to prevent explosions or to limit their impact on people, plant and the environment. It is required wherever flammable gases, vapours, mists or dusts can form an explosive atmosphere when mixed with air.

In industrial applications, such conditions occur in particular in the chemical, petrochemical, oil and gas industries, as well as in the energy and pharmaceutical sectors. For an explosion to occur, three conditions must be met simultaneously:

  • flammable substance
  • oxygen (air)
  • effective ignition source

The aim of explosion protection is to reliably eliminate at least one of these factors.

A key component of explosion protection is the classification of potentially explosive atmospheres into so-called zones. Specially developed and certified equipment, components and systems are used in these areas; thanks to appropriate types of ignition protection, these do not themselves constitute an effective source of ignition. The requirements for the design, testing, marking and operation of such products are laid down by international standards and certification schemes such as ATEX (Europe) and IECEx.

ATEX- or IECEx-certified equipment, components and systems are therefore crucial for:

  • the safety of staff
  • the protection of plant and the environment
  • compliance with legal requirements
  • reliable and cost-effective plant operation

Your benefits

HERMETIC canned motor pumps combine explosion protection, efficiency and reliability, offering maximum safety for demanding applications.

Hermetically sealed system

As there are no shaft seals, there are no moving sealing points exposed to the outside. The hermetically sealed system minimises the risk of flammable media escaping and creating an explosive atmosphere.

Avoiding sources of ignition

Various types of ignition protection prevent the occurrence of effective ignition sources, such as sparks, hot surfaces or flames.

Certified for potentially explosive atmospheres

HERMETIC pumps are certified in accordance with the relevant explosion protection requirements, including ATEX. They represent the state of the art and ensure safe operation in potentially explosive atmospheres.

Integrated safety through the design principle

Compared with conventional pump systems, the design of the canned motor pump reduces the need for monitoring and protective measures, thereby contributing to safe and cost-effective operation.
