Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is a colourless, odourless gas that plays a crucial role in the global carbon cycle and is used in numerous industrial applications. For example, CO2 is used in the chemical industry as a raw material for the production of methanol, urea, organic acids and other chemical products. Furthermore, CO2 is used in the food industry, for instance in beverages, to inhibit the growth of microorganisms or for decaffeination.
Thanks to its excellent thermodynamic properties, CO₂ is also used as a refrigerant in industry, commerce and automotive engineering. At the same time, the avoidance, reuse, storage and transport of CO₂ within the framework of Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) concepts are becoming increasingly important.
