Pumps for water-glycol mixtures (e.g. ethylene glycol-water)

Efficient cooling for industry, energy and mobility

Water is one of the most important coolants worldwide. Water-glycol mixtures are based on a combination of water and a glycol, such as ethylene glycol (C2H6O2), which acts as an antifreeze and corrosion inhibitor. The mixing ratio is adjusted depending on the required temperature range, which allows the freezing point to be lowered to as low as –50 °C.

Water-glycol mixtures are used, for example, to cool inverters in the rail and wind power industries, as well as serving as a secondary cooling medium in refrigeration systems using natural refrigerants. Their advantages include low-cost procurement, global availability and the high specific heat capacity of water. This makes them particularly suitable for cooling and temperature control applications where reliable heat dissipation is required.

Things to know about water-glycol mixtures

Typical operating temperature range

  • Operates in liquid form from approx. –40 °C to +80 °C
  • Water-glycol mixtures ensure reliable operation even at low ambient temperatures and protect systems against frost and corrosion.

Cooling of inverters in wind turbines

The operation of inverters and transformers generates significant heat losses, which must be reliably dissipated during continuous operation. Cooling systems featuring HERMETIC canned motor pumps are used for this purpose. These pumps are particularly impressive in offshore wind turbines due to their virtually maintenance-free operation and high availability.

Inverter and transistor cooling in rail vehicles

Modern rail vehicles use high-performance inverters which generate significant amounts of heat when converting electrical energy. Water-glycol mixtures enable efficient cooling in applications with high power density and limited installation space. They are therefore used in particular in high-speed trains, underground trains and trams.
