Monomers are reactive chemical compounds that can be linked together to form polymers through polymerisation. The most important examples include acrylic acid (C3H4O2), methyl methacrylate (MMA, C5H8O2) and butyl acrylate (C7H12O2).

Acrylates and monomers are predominantly produced and processed in continuous production processes. Typical applications include paints and varnishes, adhesives, plastics (e.g. Plexiglas®) and coatings for metals and building materials. The handling of these media, some of which are reactive, places high demands on operational safety, availability and process stability.
