Safe conveyance of volatile and flammable media

Hydrocarbons with chain lengths ranging from C1 to C10 are organic compounds consisting solely of carbon and hydrogen. They include gases such as methane (CH₄), propane (C₃H₈) and butane (C₄H₁₀), as well as highly volatile liquids such as pentane (C₅H₁₂) to decane (C₁₀H₂₂).

These media are used, amongst other things, as fuels, solvents or feedstocks in the chemical and petrochemical industries. Due to their volatility and flammability, they place high demands on leak-tightness, explosion protection and operational safety. Hermetically sealed pump systems help to prevent emissions and ensure safe plant operation.

Hydrocarbons with chain lengths ranging from C1 to C10 are characterised by high volatility, low water solubility and good flammability. Many of these substances can form explosive mixtures with air and therefore require appropriate safety measures.

Propane reflux in an LNG plant

As part of the capacity expansion of an LNG plant in Africa, a HERMETIC canned motor pump is being used as a reflux pump in a depropaniser column. It reliably returns condensed propane to the column, thereby supporting the separation of propane from heavier hydrocarbons. This increases the purity of the product and ensures that it meets the quality requirements for the European market.
